Bluegrass in Malaysia

For some reason, it seems fitting that the first bluegrass concert I’ve been to was in Malaysia. When I was studying abroad in Rwanda, I had a similar surreal feeling, going to a wedding and listening to a CD of American country music, everyone singing along.

The bluegrass concert was put on by the US Embassy. Soft diplomacy and all that jazz (or bluegrass!). Later on in the evening, Akasha, an amazing Malaysian instrumental group played. (As an aside, the above picture was part of an art exhibition by a Malaysian artist inspired by Akasha’s music).

Anyway, I really enjoyed Akasha’s music. It reminded me of a more global Explosions in the Sky, so basically pure awesomeness.

Also, here’s a video of a song that the bluegrass singers and Akasha performed together.
